The first window runs from early September to Friday 9 October. The second opens on Tuesday 3 November and runs to the European timetable change in December. The three weeks in between are a school holiday across most of north-western Europe. The savings are on the trains: Eurostar's lowest fare for 9 September to 8 December is £39 one way, the same as it was in summer, and what changes in autumn is how many of those seats are still on sale when a traveller comes to look. Senior cards then take a further 10 to 50 per cent off, depending on the country. Hotels are the caveat: the 2026 data puts autumn room rates within a few per cent of summer, September now sells nearly as well as August, and the real drop in price comes in late October and November, in central and northern Europe more than on the Mediterranean. ## The Crowd Numbers Behind Autumn City Breaks in Europe Eurostat counted 511.5 million nights in EU tourist accommodation in August 2025. September had 314.6 million, October 238.6 million and November 148.5 million. Set against August, September runs at 61.5 per cent of the peak, October at 46.7 per cent and November at 29 per cent. July and August together took [31.1 per cent of the year's nights](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20260707-1), and in Croatia and Greece the two months carry more than 40 per cent. The autumn months are also growing faster than the summer ones. September nights rose 4.18 per cent in 2025 and October nights 4.71 per cent, against 3.67 per cent for July and 3.36 per cent for August. The European Travel Commission's second-quarter report, published on 9 July, said that "shoulder months are also gaining importance", with September bookings rising strongly, and its figures for late 2025 show airline traffic in October and November growing faster than in July and August. Virtuoso, the luxury travel network, says September bookings to Europe were 92 per cent of August's in 2025, up from 79 per cent in 2023, and that September may outsell August this year. Its autumn bookings for Europe are up 49 per cent. ## Europe in October and the School Holiday Pile-Up The northern Dutch region breaks first, from 10 to 18 October, and the central and southern regions follow from 17 to 25 October. Edinburgh's schools are out from 12 to 19 October. France takes its Toussaint holiday in every zone from Saturday 17 October to Monday 2 November. Germany staggers its autumn break by state: Hesse from 5 to 17 October, Lower Saxony and Saxony from 12 to 24 October, North Rhine-Westphalia from 17 to 31 October, Berlin and Hamburg from 19 October to the end of the month, and Baden-Württemberg from 26 to 30 October. England's half-term is 26 to 30 October in most council areas, with Leicester out a week earlier and some areas running to 2 November. Austria's schools close from 27 to 31 October, and with the national holiday on 26 October and All Saints' Day on 1 November the break in practice runs from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November. Bavaria falls outside the pattern, with its break on 2 to 6 November, so Munich and the Bavarian Alps have their school-holiday week after everyone else has gone back. Switzerland breaks earlier: the cantonal school calendars have Bern out from 19 September to 11 October, Basel and Lucerne from 26 September to 11 October, Zurich from 3 to 18 October, Vaud from 10 to 25 October and Geneva from 17 to 25 October. That puts Swiss families on the Alpine lines from late September. What remains is the two windows: early September to Friday 9 October, and from Tuesday 3 November onwards, with the Bavarian week as the single exception. ## Booking Windows for Rail Holidays in Europe Eurostar's lowest Standard fare between 9 September and 8 December is £39, or €44, one way as part of a return. The summer lead-in was the same €44. Eurostar prices by demand rather than by season, as every large operator now does, and what the autumn traveller gets is more of the cheapest tier still unsold on the day they book. ÖBB's Sparschiene fares start at €4.90 across Europe and at €24.90 for a seat on a Nightjet. Deutsche Bahn's Super Sparpreis Europa starts at €19.90. On Trenitalia, a Rome to Florence Super Economy ticket is €19.90 against a Base fare of €50, and Rome to Venice is €29.90 against €92. Il Sole 24 Ore, the Italian business daily, reported that Trenitalia moved its Frecce services to full dynamic pricing from 1 January 2026, so those low fares move with demand. SNCF's Prem's fares on Paris to Nice start at €25 against €140 for a flexible ticket. Renfe's Madrid to Seville fares start at €28 against €75. Eurostar opens sales 10 to 11 months ahead. Deutsche Bahn sells Sparpreis Europa fares up to 12 months out for Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland and six months out for other countries, and puts its next timetable on sale in mid-October. Nightjet sales open 180 days ahead. Trenitalia's Frecce are bookable through to December. SNCF opens its winter sales on 30 September: TGV Inoui for 13 December to 6 January, and Lyria, Italy and Spain services through to 28 March. The Local, the English-language news site, reports that ÖBB's standard fares rise 3.5 per cent from 13 December, the day the European timetable changes. A trip that ends before then runs on the current timetable. ## Senior Cards for Rail Travel in Europe The [Interrail senior pass](https://www.interrail.com/en/interrail-passes/deals/interrail-senior-discounts) takes 10 per cent off the adult price for anyone aged 60 or over on the first day of travel, and each senior can bring two children free. From 9 September Eurail becomes Interrail, so a reader searching for a Eurail senior pass will find it sold under the other name. The 2026 second-class Global Pass costs a senior €255 for four days of travel within a month, against €283 for an adult, €343 for seven days against €381, and €626 for a continuous month against €696. First-class passes run from €367 to €1,242 at the adult price. There is no autumn promotion on the deals page at the time of writing. The national cards give more: Renfe's Tarjeta Dorada costs €6 a year, is open from 60, takes 25 per cent off AVE and long-distance fares, and has to be bought in person at a station. SNCF's Carte Avantage Senior costs €49 a year from 60 and takes 30 per cent off TGV Inoui and Intercités fares in first and second class. Trenitalia withdrew its Carta Argento on 4 April 2026 and now offers FrecciaSENIOR, a set of fixed fares for CartaFreccia members over 60: from €29 in Standard, €34 in Premium and €39 in Business, bought at least 11 days ahead, non-refundable, and not valid in Executive. On Rome to Venice, where the Base fare is €92 and Super Economy €29.90, the senior fare from €29 is a fixed price booked 11 days out. Deutsche Bahn's Senioren BahnCard 50 costs €122 in second class or €241 in first from the age of 65, and takes 50 per cent off Flexpreis fares and 25 per cent off Sparpreis. It pays for itself once a traveller's flexible fares pass twice its price. ÖBB's Vorteilscard Senior costs €31 a year from 65 and takes 50 per cent off. Eurostar gives travellers over 60 10 per cent off Standard, Plus and Premier fares on its continental routes between France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, but not on any service to or from London. In Switzerland the Half Fare Card costs CHF 150 for a month. ## Hotel and Flight Prices for Europe in October and November > "The idea of fall being a low-demand period with low prices is increasingly less true." > — Hayley Berg, Hopper Hayley Berg of Hopper, the travel booking app, said that to CNBC in a report published on 31 August 2026. Hopper's figures in the same report put the autumn saving on flights between the United States and Europe at 22 per cent this year, down from 33 per cent in 2023. Expedia told CNBC that lodging in its ten most-booked international destinations is 0.7 per cent dearer this autumn than it was in summer. AirDNA's average daily rate for European short-term rentals was €159.20 in July 2026. Its forward rate for September is €152.34, up 12.9 per cent on a year earlier, and for October €148.58, up 14.3 per cent. Autumn sits 4 to 7 per cent below July and is rising faster year on year. Virtuoso says the European autumn rates its members are paying are up more than 7 per cent. Lighthouse, which tracks advertised hotel rates, had Venice down 9.3 per cent year on year for the fourth quarter of 2025, London down 3.9 per cent and Lisbon down 2.1 per cent, while Amalfi was up 35.9 per cent, Crete 31.2 per cent and Marbella 25.4 per cent. Kayak's UK figures, published on 27 August, put international flights from Britain between 1 September and 31 October at an average 26 per cent below July and August, and the spread by country is wide: Romania is down 47 per cent to £123 and Sweden down 41 per cent to £113, while Rhodes is down 6 per cent and Palermo is unchanged. The drop in room rates, where there is one, comes in late October and November and in central and northern Europe. September on the Mediterranean is priced close to summer. Venice, the one city in Lighthouse's list with a fall of nearly a tenth, charged day visitors €5 or €10 on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July this year, according to reports of the city's schedule, and charges nothing in autumn; overnight guests were exempt in any case. ## Window One, Early September to 9 October The new train of the season is European Sleeper's Brussels to Milan service, which makes its first run on 9 September. It leaves Brussels at 17:22 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and reaches Milano Porta Garibaldi at 11:30 the next morning, by way of Cologne, Zurich, the Gotthard, Lugano and Como. The return leaves Milan at 17:12 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. A seat is €29.99, a couchette from €49.99, a Comfort Standard sleeper €99.99 and Comfort Plus from €129.99 with breakfast. A London to Milan trip in the first window is therefore a £39 Eurostar to Brussels and a €99.99 cabin, and the night's accommodation is in the fare. The same operator's Paris to Berlin sleeper, running since 26 March, leaves Paris at 18:03 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and arrives at 10:10, and its [Brussels to Copenhagen service](https://richtravelmagazine.com/article/four-of-europe-s-coolest-cities-are-set-to-be-connected-by-a-brand-new-sleeper-train) is covered separately. Three dates in the first window are best avoided: a national strike by Italian state railway crews called for 7 and 8 September; Oktoberfest in Munich, from 19 September to 4 October; and Vienna's Kaiser Wiesn, the city's own beer festival, from 24 September to 11 October. The Vienna State Opera's season is reported to open on 4 September, which gives the whole of the first window. In the Douro the grape picking runs from mid-September into early October. In Venice the 61st Biennale, "In Minor Keys", is open until 22 November and closed on Mondays. Seville in October averages a daily high of 26C with about six days of rain, on the Spanish met office's long-run figures; Lisbon averages 22.6C and Rome 22.2C, each with seven to nine rain days. Paris averages 16.5C and Vienna 14.3C. For the top of the market, Golden Eagle's Danube Express runs its Castles of Transylvania itinerary from 23 to 29 September at €11,800 for a Deluxe twin cabin. The timetable circulated to travel agents has Belmond's Venice Simplon-Orient-Express leaving Venice for Paris on 8 and 23 September and Paris for Venice on 4 and 19 September. ## Window Two, From 3 November Alba's 96th white truffle fair runs on weekends from 10 October to 6 December, so the November weekends fall inside the second window. La Dolce Vita Orient Express has a two-night Truffle Route among eight itineraries with availability from September to December; the operator does not publish prices, and one agent quotes from £3,100 for a one-night itinerary. Belmond's Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is from £3,885 a person in a Historic Cabin from Venice to Paris and from £4,275 from Paris to Venice, and the timetable circulated to agents lists a Suite at £8,785 and a Grand Suite at £12,300, with departures from Venice on 3, 10, 17 and 26 November and from Paris on 5, 19 and 28 November. A November week on ordinary trains is a £39 Eurostar to Paris as part of a return, Trenitalia's Paris to Milan service from €27, a Saturday in Alba, and a Frecciarossa on to Venice for the last weeks of the Biennale. In Florence the Uffizi charges €25 at the door, €29 pre-booked and €16 after 4pm. In Paris, the Musée d'Orsay has a Mary Cassatt exhibition listed from 6 October to 31 January. Salzburg's Jazz&TheCity festival, 15 to 18 October and free, falls inside the pile-up, in the week when Zurich, Vaud, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Edinburgh and the Dutch north are all out of school. The USI-CIT union has called a national general strike across all sectors in Italy for 30 October, which also falls inside the pile-up. Bavaria's schools are out from 2 to 6 November. The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October. Sunset in Rome is at 18:30 on 15 October and 16:51 a month later; in Vienna it is 18:08 and 16:18. Seville in November still averages a daily high of 20.2C, Lisbon 18C and Rome 16.9C, each with eight to ten days of rain. Paris averages 11.1C and Vienna 8.8C. ## Night Trains in Europe, Premium Seats and the Practical Details Trenitalia's Frecciarossa Executive carriage has ten leather seats, 74cm wide, that rotate through 180 degrees, with catering at the seat and access to the FrecciaLounge; the FrecciaSENIOR fares do not apply in it. ÖBB's new-generation Nightjet stock has a Comfort Plus sleeper with an en-suite toilet and shower for one or two people, and single mini cabins. The new stock is reported to have run on Vienna to Zurich since 15 June, with Amsterdam to Zurich due to get it from 13 December, so in the second window the en-suite cabin is a Vienna to Zurich booking. The Glacier Express's Excellence Class is a CHF 540 surcharge a person a journey on top of a first-class ticket, for a five-course menu and a guaranteed window seat. Eurostar Premier is a dedicated coach with a meal at the seat and lounge access, and allows three bags plus hand luggage; Standard and Plus allow two, all at a maximum of 85cm, with an extra bag from £35. Send My Bag will send a 30kg case to Italy from €37 and from the UK to France for £29. Eurostar Assist is reached through its contact form or on +44 3432 186 186. Deutsche Bahn's Mobilitätsservice is on 030 65212888 and needs the booking by 20:00 the day before, or 24 hours ahead for international journeys. SNCF's Assist'enGare service is on 3212, is free and asks for 24 hours' notice. For the first and last nights there are hotels at the station door: the Excelsior Hotel Gallia opposite Milano Centrale, the Schweizerhof opposite Zurich's main station and a Mercure at Paris Gare de Lyon. Deutsche Bahn and the GDL drivers' union reached a deal in February 2026 that is reported to carry a peace obligation to 2028, which rules out a German rail strike this autumn. No SNCF strike notice had been filed for September to December as of 2 September.
