The wind on Pendle Hill comes in from the west with nothing to slow it down. By the time you reach the trig point, 557 metres (1,827ft) above the sea, your boots carry half the moor and the Ribble Valley spreads below you in bands of grey and green. Local legend says that visitors to Pendle Hill can be seized by sudden anger, panic or dread. On a wet October afternoon, you are more likely to feel cold, muddy and ready for the café by the car park in Barley.

The fear in this landscape is old, and the events behind it were real. Each of the five destinations below stands on a true story darker than any of its ghosts, and each lets you walk straight into that story. [Halloween falls on a Saturday this year](https://richtravelmagazine.com/article/halloween-2026-saturday-samhain-origins), so book early wherever you go.
