Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens on 11 December, [twenty years after the plans were first unveiled in 2006](https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2026/07/28/guggenheim-abu-dhabi-announces-opening-date). It is the largest museum in the Guggenheim group, and the largest Frank Gehry designed.

The building stands on a promontory on Saadiyat Island, a short walk from Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened in 2017.

## Ten Cones Carry the Shade and the Ventilation

Gehry's design gathers 30 galleries around a central atrium, under ten sculptural cones that rise to 88 metres. Nine are clad in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass. They are not only silhouette: the cones draw air through the building and throw shade across it, which lowers the energy it takes to keep cool in Abu Dhabi.

Inside there are 11,600 square metres of gallery space, with a further 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas across the cones and terraces, in a building of 80,000 square metres.

## Gehry Died in December 2025, a Year Before the Opening

His career ran seven decades and nearly 200 completed buildings, and the Pritzker jury that gave him its prize in 1989 cited a “restless spirit” that made his work “a unique expression of contemporary society and its ambivalent values”. The titanium-clad Guggenheim in Bilbao, which opened in 1997, made him famous well beyond architecture.

## The Galleries Are Hung by Theme, Not by Decade

The collection has been assembled since 2009 and covers art from the 1960s to the present, in painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image and new media. A statement from the museum describes it as centred on West Asia, North Africa and South Asia and the wider region, with works from every continent.

Rather than walking a timeline, visitors pick their own route through galleries grouped around themes such as Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling. It is a hang that asks you to notice what connects a work in one room to a work three rooms away, rather than what year each was made.

## The Artists and the Opening Exhibitions Have Not Been Named

What is not yet settled is what will be on the walls in December. The Department of Culture and Tourism says more about the collection and the commissions will be announced in the coming months, and no artists, works or opening exhibitions have been named so far. The cost of the building is undisclosed.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi joins Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi in Saadiyat Cultural District.
