Autumn is the best kept secret in European travel, and hardly anyone treats it that way. The beaches are still warm in September. The queues at the Colosseum and the Acropolis have thinned out by October. And the hotels that charged summer prices two months ago are quietly offering the same rooms for 20 to 30 per cent less. The problem is not finding an affordable hotel in Europe this autumn. The problem is knowing which ones are actually good, rather than just cheap.
