Naples Capodichino, which handled more than 13.2 million passengers in 2025, closed to all flights on 1st November and will stay shut until the end of the month. Its operator, GESAC, is rebuilding the runway and taxiways and replacing the runway lighting in a project worth around €30 million, with crews working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The airport is expected to reopen on 1st December, ahead of the Immaculate Conception holiday weekend from 5th to 8th December.

The works were first planned for February 2026 and were moved to November, traditionally the airport's least busy month. If you have a trip booked, the closure changes how you arrive rather than whether you can go. For many travellers the alternative works better: Salerno Costa d'Amalfi airport sits closer to Amalfi, Positano and Ravello than Capodichino does.

## Which Flights Use Salerno Airport in November

Salerno Costa d'Amalfi airport, code QSR, is handling 15 routes while Naples is closed:

- **Italy:** Milan Malpensa (easyJet), Milan Linate (ITA Airways and Aeroitalia), Bergamo (Ryanair), and Genoa, Turin and Trieste (Aeroitalia)
- **Europe:** Amsterdam and Paris (Transavia), Barcelona (Vueling), Madrid (Iberia), and Düsseldorf and Stuttgart (Eurowings)
- **Further afield:** Dubai (flydubai), Casablanca (Air Arabia Maroc) and Sharm el-Sheikh (Air Cairo and Neos)

The Lufthansa group has suspended its Naples flights for the whole of November and, where it can, rebooks passengers through Rome Fiumicino. ITA Airways has replaced its Rome to Naples flight with a coach.

Look at the airport code on your ticket or in your airline's app. QSR means your flight now uses Salerno. NAP means Naples, and a November flight still showing NAP needs a call to your airline.

## Flying From the UK to Naples This Month

In a normal month you can fly to Naples with easyJet from Gatwick, with Ryanair from Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh, and with British Airways, TUI and Jet2. The Salerno list for November includes no UK route. If you hold a November booking from a UK airport, open your airline's app to see whether the flight has been cancelled or moved.

Rome gives you the simplest way in. From Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express reaches Roma Termini in 32 minutes for €14, with trains every 15 to 30 minutes. From Termini, the Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains reach Napoli Centrale in about 1 hour 10 minutes, with dozens of departures a day. Before you book, check the dates of [this month's train and flight strikes in Italy](https://richtravelmagazine.com/article/europe-strikes-november-2026-trains-flights).

You can also reach Salerno on one ticket with a change in Amsterdam, Paris, Milan, Barcelona or Madrid, which puts you at the gateway to the Amalfi Coast without a train journey from Rome.

## Getting From Salerno Airport to Naples, Sorrento and the Islands

**To Naples:** a Busitalia shuttle runs between Salerno airport and Piazza Garibaldi, outside Napoli Centrale station, with eight journeys a day in each direction timed to the flights. A one-way ticket costs €12, and you pay on board by card or phone, not cash. Allow 90 minutes to two hours by road, depending on traffic.

**To the Amalfi Coast:** the Salerno Airlink coach reaches Salerno railway station in about 40 minutes without stopping. From the station, SITA buses run along the coast to Amalfi and Positano.

**By shared taxi:** a trial service with fixed fares runs from the airport to Napoli Centrale and to Salerno station.

**To Capri, Ischia and Procida:** take the shuttle to Naples, then a hydrofoil or ferry from Molo Beverello or Calata Porta di Massa.

**To Sorrento:** take the shuttle to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana train or a ferry across the bay.

If you booked a private transfer from Capodichino, move it to your new arrival airport and your real landing time.

## Your Rights if Your Naples Flight Was Cancelled

For flights covered by EU Regulation 261/2004, and its UK equivalent for flights from British airports, your airline must offer you a refund or an alternative flight when it cancels. If you accept a flight to a different airport, such as Salerno or Rome, the airline must pay for your transfer to the airport you originally booked, so keep every receipt.

Cash compensation is unlikely. Airlines owe it only when they tell you about a cancellation less than 14 days before departure, and this closure was announced months ahead.

## Why Salerno Can Be the Better Way In

Salerno airport reopened to scheduled passenger flights in July 2024, with its runway extended to 2,000 metres to take larger aircraft. For a stay in Amalfi, Positano or Ravello, it spares you the longer road journey from Naples.

The works at Capodichino are part of a wider plan that includes a second terminal for flights from outside the Schengen area, among them flights to and from the UK. When Naples reopens in December, you will have two airports serving the bay, and a choice of the one that puts you nearest your hotel.
