North Dakota's sunflowers reach peak bloom from late July through August, and this season 28 fields have agreed to be found. That is a record for the state tourism office's sunflower map, which lists the participating fields and is updated through the season with bloom conditions, so a traveler can tell which ones are at colour and which are still coming.

Timing moves with planting dates and weather, which is why the office asks people to check the map before setting out rather than drive on last year's calendar. National Sunflower Day falls on Saturday, August 1.

Behind the season sits a commodity crop having a very good run. North Dakota led the country in 2025 with [1.09 billion pounds harvested](https://www.sunflowernsa.com/magazine/articles/default.aspx?ArticleID=4193), up 111 percent on the previous year, on planted acreage that rose 89 percent and a yield of 1,958 pounds an acre, while 2024 had been a record low for the nation. This year's crop was 97 percent emerged by the first week of July, against a five-year average of 91 percent, and rated 49 percent good or excellent.
