A cocktail in New York typically costs $16 on the menu, a draft beer $9 and a glass of wine $14, before tax and tip. Those are citywide medians from 5PM NYC, a happy hour guide that counted 109,975 listed drink prices on 2,254 bar and restaurant menus in all five boroughs and published the figures on October 19.

New York City's combined [sales tax rate is 8.875%](https://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/publications/sales/pub718.pdf), so a $16 cocktail comes to about $17.42 before the tip, and the report notes that service charges also vary by establishment.
