The people who have sat down and worked out what retirement will cost are not, on the whole, worried about the money. Asked what troubles them more about travelling in retirement, 51 percent said running out of healthy years to enjoy it and 8 percent said running out of money. The rest were split between the two or worried about neither.

Those answers come from 855 subscribers to Boldin, a retirement planning platform, all of whom had named travel one of their two most important goals for retirement. Boldin put the same question, word for word, to a national panel of 246 American adults aged 45 and over with household incomes above $100,000, and got a different shape of answer: 24 percent named healthy years, 23 percent named money, and 45 percent said the two weighed equally. That panel was not screened for whether anyone in it travels, plans, or holds a budget of any kind.

The gap between the two groups is not a matter of wealth. Boldin capped its comparison panel at six-figure households precisely so that both sets of people were comfortable. What separates them is how much either group knows about what it can afford.
