Four years ago the western Ugandan town of Kasese had about 500 hotel rooms. It now has more than 2,000, and its roads have been rebuilt. The organisers of the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon credit the race with the change, and the numbers behind it are steep: the first edition in 2022 drew just over 800 runners, the field doubled in 2023, and 6,000 people from 36 countries signed up in 2025.

Kasese sits between two national parks and straddles the Equator, and for years it was better known for bad headlines than for where it is. The fifth edition of the race runs on 22 August, entry costs $60 for international runners, and registration is open.
