The city is still lit orange from its streetlamps when the desert begins. Somewhere past the last roundabout, the tarmac gives way to a track, and the track gives way to sand the colour of rust, rising into dunes tall enough to swallow the headlights whole. This is the Lahbab desert, an hour or so southeast of Dubai, and at this time of the morning it does not look like a tourist destination at all. It looks like the edge of something considerably older than the city behind it.

## A colour with a chemical explanation

The red is not a trick of the light, though the light does make it more dramatic. The sand here carries a high concentration of iron oxide, the same compound that turns exposed metal to rust, deposited into these dunes over millions of years as an ancient sea retreated and left its mineral residue behind in the rock beneath the surface. That sea, part of the long vanished Tethys Ocean, once covered this entire stretch of the Arabian Peninsula before continental drift pulled the land clear of it and left wind to do the rest of the sculpting. Every dune out here is, in a very real sense, a slow negotiation between rust-coloured stone and thousands of years of prevailing wind, and the negotiation is still being carried out this morning, one grain of sand at a time.
